Paddle Board Yoga: The Hottest Workout Trend!

Watch out yoga and surfing enthusiasts, there’s a whole new activity that’s just for you! Paddle board yoga is the latest trend to hit the waves. Although yoga has been practiced for thousands of years, and is currently enjoying a resurgence in popularity, only now have people started the idea of merging yoga with the experience of being on water. This is where paddle boarding comes into the picture.

Why Combine Yoga and Paddle Boarding?

Paddle boarding may not be as old as the practice of yoga, but it is considered an ancient form of surfing that originated in Hawaii, as a form of practice for surfers when the waves are down. The paddle board is actually a surfboard that is thicker and more buoyant, giving more support and stability to the user. This kind of surfing is different from the usual surfing that we are accustomed to, because it is best done on the flat waters of lakes, ponds, and sea that doesn’t involve heavy waves. Hence, paddle boarding is perfect for yoga exercises, because you feel sturdy on the board even whilst on water, therefore enabling you to do the yoga positions while floating above the board.

People who have tried paddle board yoga swear by its safety and enjoyment. Being able to complete the poses, from the sun salutations until the final resting pose on the water gives a completely different dynamic to the ritual. Balance and awareness of your body movements, two huge components of a good yoga workout, is increased while afloat on a paddle board. Mind exercise is also involved, whenever you control fears or worries about getting wet and splashing face-down on the water!

What You Need

With paddle boarding, you won’t need to break the bank to be able to enjoy the activity. All you need are a few things to get started:

Paddleboard: This is the biggest component of the sport. For beginners, it is recommended that the board is wider so as to give more stability while doing yoga. As you become more experienced, then you can start using the narrower boards.

Paddle: Stand up paddles should have an angle in the shaft that helps to have efficient strokes, and it should come in a size that is approximately 6” to 8” taller than the paddler.


Clothing: It need not be said that you will get wet when you paddle board, so wear something that can get wet such as a bathing suit, wet suit or dry suit, or a surfing outfit.


Paddle board yoga may sound crazy at first, but upon closer scrutiny it actually is a great way to improve balance, build core strength, and overcome fear of water. And the best part is, you get to do all this while being able to connect with nature.
